Why it matters

What makes selling a course harder than teaching it

Every sale shared with the platform
Course marketplaces and all-in-one platforms take a monthly fee, a cut of each sale, or both. On a modest launch, that's a real share of what you earn for months of work.
Five tools held together with links
Videos on one site, payments on another, a quiz tool, a community app and a certificate template in a document. Students get lost between them, and you can't see who finished what.
Visitors who never get past the sales page
People want to see how you teach before they pay. Without free lessons they can open from your own website, most of them leave without buying.

A day with Kommune

A month at Lumen Photo Academy

The sample academy runs the way two instructors in Vancouver would sell photography courses on Kommune. Here's how it's set up and what happens from a visitor's first free lesson to their certificate.

  1. 1

    Elena builds the course

Elena creates Photography Fundamentals: three modules of lessons with notes and practice assignments, a quiz at the end of each module and a certificate of completion. She marks the first two lessons as free previews and sets a one-time price.

  2. 2

The academy's website shows the course

The homepage lists every course with its price, the number of lessons and quizzes, and the full curriculum, with each free preview lesson one click away. Prices, outlines and previews update by themselves when Elena changes the course.

  3. 3

A visitor watches a free lesson, then buys

A visitor opens the exposure lesson, likes the teaching and clicks Buy on the course page. They type the launch code for 25% off, give their name and email and pay by card. Kommune makes their account, adds them as a student and emails a receipt with GST.

  4. 4

    Learning at their own pace

The student works through the lessons with Continue and a progress bar, asks questions under each lesson, and takes the module quizzes: multiple choice, short answer, putting steps in order and matching pairs. Each quiz must be passed at 70% before the next lessons open.

  5. 5

    A certificate to share

When the last quiz is passed, the certificate is issued. The student downloads the PDF, adds it to LinkedIn and shares the verify link, which shows the course, the academy, the date and Elena's name.

  6. 6

Payment plans, a cohort and a membership

Sam's Lightroom Masterclass can be paid in three monthly payments and opens a module a week. Elena's Portrait Lighting Cohort starts on set dates with 16 seats, a private group discussion and a weekly live critique. The Photo Club membership adds a new challenge every month.
